Kerala has added Munambam Beach near Kochi to its Beach Tourism portfolio. Under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme, infrastructure development like pathways, rest rooms, information centre, food kiosks on the beach front has been carried out at a cost of Rs three crore. The beach with the facilities was opened recently for tourists. This information was divulged by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister of Tourism, Kerala while speaking at the recent inauguration of Onam festivities in New Delhi. The minister informed that the Kerala recorded 17 per cent growth in tourist arrivals last year despite slowdown in the global travel market.

Balakrishnan opined that this achievement has been possible due to proper planning and marketing of the destinations by the state tourism department. He mentioned that there has been a lot of interest among domestic and foreign tourists to visit Kerala during festival seasons like Onam. The boat races and other cultural extravaganzas during festivals in the state have helped in attracting tourists.
