CHICAGO: The Indian-American community here today kicked off week-long celebrations to commemorate the 62nd year of India's independence as they unfurled tri-colour amid singing of the national anthem.

Extending city Mayor Richard Daley's message to the Indian community, Director at the Chicago Commission on Human Relations Kripal Zala said Daley has given a proclamation declaring August 15 to be celebrated as Indian Independence Day in the city and has called upon the city residents to "appreciate the work done by Indians".

"Chicago's history has been shaped and enriched by Indian Americans living here. They have made outstanding contributions to business, healthcare and other fields in the city," Daley's message read.

The flag-hoisting ceremony was organised by the Federation of Indian Associations. Addressing the gathering of Indian-Americans outside the mayor's office, federation president Hyder Mohammed said the "Indian community has been working hand-in-hand with its US counterparts, taking the friendship between the two countries to greater levels."

The ceremony also saw Indian-American youths dancing to peppy Punjabi and Bollywood music.

Flag hoisting by other Indian associations, receptions, parades and appearances by Bollywood actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Bipasha Basu, Dia Mirza and Kareena Kapoor will mark the week-long celebrations in the city.
